Our Achievements

Striving for transitional justice in Sri Lanka.

  • In 2015, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released its report on the Investigation on Sri Lanka (OISL) regarding crimes committed during and after the war that ended in 2009. This report faulted both sides for grave violations and definitively established that the Sri Lankan military committed war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Tamil population of the country. TAPF played a substantial role in advocating for an investigation and coordinating witnesses in providing evidence for the report.
  • The United States has led four resolutions at the UN Human Rights Council (2012-2015), culminating in the 2015 resolution 30/1, mandating a transitional justice process in Sri Lanka that was also co-sponsored by the Sri Lankan government. Two more resolutions, 34/1 in 2017 and 40/1 in 2017, were enacted reaffirming the commitments made in HRC 30/1 and assuring continued oversight by the High Commissioner and the HRC. TAPF facilitated the travel and logistics for Tamil Americans to have a strong advocacy presence in Geneva during the Human Rights Council sessions.
